Nicole Kidman's speech on age discrimination was a declaration of war

It's never a secret that Hollywood actresses usually have a shelf life, but it's much younger than you think: according to a recent study, by the age of 40, women get only 20% of the lead roles, compared with 80% of women in their 20s.

This disturbing example of age discrimination is what Nicole Kidman wants to light up so that it can be erased forever.

The 50-year-old Australian screen siren used the platform of the Sag Awards Ceremony to collect trophies for her role as an abused mother in Lies of All Sizes and to make bold statements about age discrimination. At least, she did.

and then she continued to beg the industry to support adult women, whose story was finally told. & She went on to say, "It's just the beginning, and I'm proud to be part of a community that is driving this change." & But I urge writers, directors, studios and financiers to invest passion and money behind our stories. We have proved that we can do it; we can continue to do it, but only with the support of the industry, with the support of money and enthusiasm.

A 2016 Washington Post briefing on this topic provides some very convincing evidence that age discrimination does dominate Hollywood and that 40 is a less golden figure for women. Robert fleck and Andrew hanssen, economists at clemson, analyzed IMDB data in American movies from 1920 to 2011 and found that gender equality had never occurred in movies. More worrying is that the number of women's main roles has declined sharply with age. Although women won 80% of the leadership roles over men in their 20s, the proportion dropped to 40% in their 30s and only 20% in their 40s.

Researchers don't believe that women are discriminated against, but blame the problem on how filmmakers react to what the public wants to see. Look at the list of the most profitable movies in 2017. Maybe they are right.

But age discrimination is not just a Hollywood affair, it can have a serious impact on health. One study found that older people with negative attitudes toward ageing may live 7.5 years less than those with positive attitudes. More worrying is that one in five adults reported age discrimination in medical institutions.

Stephanie Rogers, M.D., M.P.A.S., M.P.H., a clinical geriatric researcher at the University of California Medical School, explained: "Age discrimination in health care is very common, and many older people have experienced it." & People who feel discriminated against can worsen their functional status. & quot;

Bring the topic back to Hollywood, when we see actresses of a certain age being underperformed and replaced by actresses who are decades younger than them, it makes other people think they are waste. Aging is a normal part of everybody's life. We are getting older and older day by day. As we grow older, don't we want to watch these stories play on the screen? Other actresses have talked about age discrimination in Hollywood in the past. & I remember when I was about 40 years old, I thought every movie was my last. Authentically. Meryl Streep told The Wall Street Journal that all the evidence for other 40-year-olds at the time, 27 years ago, would convince you that it was all over.
